MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING: FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION – 1 ETH

Mental health is something we all have, yet it can still feel difficult to talk about. This module explores what mental health is and why conversations around it can sometimes feel challenging. Participants will be introduced to the mental health continuum, helping to build understanding that mental health can change over time and that everyone moves along the continuum at different points in their lives.  The session also explores how the language we use can influence stigma, and how small shifts in everyday communication can create more supportive and respectful conversations about mental health. Alongside this, the module highlights the importance of resilience and the role we each play in looking after our own wellbeing while supporting others.  The session concludes with an overview of the mental health and wellbeing education programmes delivered by Hato Hone St John, designed to build awareness, confidence, and practical skills for individuals, workplaces, and communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Learning outcomes:

1 Understand mental health and the mental health continuum, recognising that mental health can change over time and affects everyone.

2 Examine how language and everyday communication can influence stigma, and identify ways to use more supportive and respectful language when discussing mental health.

3 Identify factors that support resilience and personal wellbeing, and outline practical strategies for maintaining their own wellbeing while supporting others.
